The annual National School Sports Championship will be held in Pretoria from the 10 to 15 December 2014. The Northern Cape Provincial Team which consists of more than 800 athletes from the entire province will be converging at the Mayibuye Centre where the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in partnership with the Department of Education will be having a send off function for the Northern Cape athletes.
The National School Sports Championship will see learners from across the country compete in Pretoria. The partnership between the Sports and Recreation South Africa and the Department of Basic Education and other stakeholders will enable thousands of learners in the age group 13 to 18 years to compete for honours in a variety of sporting codes.
Schools compete at intra-school, inter-school, district and provincial level. Winning teams at the provincial Level qualify to participate in the SA Schools Championship. The championship is an opportunity for gifted sportspersons to be noticed by federation talent scouts.
At the launch of the School Sport League Programme in 2012, Minister Fikile Mbalula said, "School sport is the bedrock for sport development. No Sport Star just fell out of the sky, they all came through a program. Legends in the sport fraternity will tell you they started at school sport, that’s why we made school sport development a priority”.
