North West Legislature Committee on Community Safety to Meet Community Safety Department and SAPS Over Challenges at Coligny Police Station

The North West Provincial Legislature's Portfolio Committee on Community Safety and Transport Management and Public Works and Roads will hold an urgent oversight meeting with the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management and management of South African Police Services in the North West Province over challenges found at Coligny Police Station. The meeting will be held at the NG oos Gemeente Chamber near Coligny Police Station at 09h00.

The provincial management of SAPS led by Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt. General Sabata Kwena will present a report on the state of vehicles; police station; police cells; personnel; dysfunctional police cells and complaints of communities including Community Police Forum.

During the oversight visit at the police station on 16 February 2023, the Committee discovered that the police station is operating from a shack that is dilapidated with limited personnel, and the holding cells are not functioning for the past five years thus resulting on the detainees being transferred to neighbouring police stations. Other challenges include malfunctioning ablution facilities; lack of police personnel and inability of the police station to render proper services including at night.

The Provincial Civilian Secretariat, Ms. Mpho Maleme together with management and relevant stakeholders are expected to attend the meeting.

Members of the Media who would like to attend the meeting can contact Ms. Namhla Luhabe on 079 527 0628.
