North West Economic Development hosts consumer walk day, 13 and 14 Mar

Economic Development department to embark on consumer walk day

The North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism will during the Month of March 2020 commemorate World Consumer Rights Day by embarking on a series of activities to raise awareness on the rights and responsibilities of consumers. The focus for this year’s celebration will be on the sales of motor vehicles under the theme “Fighting Consumer exploitation”.

The Consumer Protection Act which embraces consumer rights which includes Right to Fair Value, Good Quality and Safety.  This implies that consumers have the right to receive goods that are of good quality, in good working order, without any defects and for a fair value.

The department has observed that most of the motor vehicle dealerships do not understand or ignore their responsibilities in terms of sales of motor vehicle and end up not adhering to Consumer Protection Act. “In resolving this they felt that it will proper if we have thorough business engagements businesses to empower them to be in compliance with relevant legislations to avoid conflicts between them and consumers, says Mr Edwin Letsogo: Director Consumer Affairs.

“The programme for the month will start with roadshows in Mogwase, Lichtenburg, Vryburg and Potchefstroom, on the 13th March 2020 the Department will have an engagement with motor dealership in the form of a dialogue in Matlosana and close with Consumer walk and exhibitions that will be led by MEC Kenetswe Mosenogi, Chairperson of Provincial Consumer Court, Mr Nkomo together with Departmental management and staff on the 14th March 2020, at Trim Park in Potchefstroom, said Letsogo.

Consumers will be afforded an opportunity to interact with various regulatory bodies which include; Motor Industry Ombudsman (MIOSA), National Credit Regulator (NCR) and Banking Ombudsman.  

All community members are invited to join the Consumer Walk that will start at Rivier Street, and end at Trim Park in Retief Street, in Potchefstroom

It is therefore our commitment to educate businesses and consumers about consumers’ rights as encapsulated in the Act and enforce them when they are infringed”.
