North West Department of Health to kick start Learner Pregnancy Awareness Campaign aimed at tackling teen pregnancy

North West Department of Health will be launching a Learner Pregnancy Awareness Campaign aimed at educating communities and learners of school going age about the dangers of unplanned pregnancies and the risks of engaging in Inter-generational & transactional sexual activities.

The campaign themed “together turning the tide against teenage and learner pregnancies” is also aimed at empowering learners with information on reproductive health so they can make wiser choices.

The department will also use the platform to encourage the use of contraception for sexually active learners and teenagers and advocate against “sugar daddy syndrome” or inter-generational sexual relationships.

MEC Masike said that the department aspires to provide preventive and promotive services that address the immediate and future health needs of young women in and out of school. “This campaign is not only centred on creating awareness about teenage pregnancy, but will also drive the message of discipline and moral regeneration.

“It is disheartening to see the number of school girls who fall pregnant. We can no longer fold our arms and lament when these social ills continue to ravage the future of our children. We need to work together with parents, teachers, and the community to steer our children in the right direction, they must put education first,” Masike said.

Members the media are invited to the launch scheduled to take place on Saturday, 27 July at Raphurele High School, Welgeval (Mogwase) at 10h00.
