National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) to honour 117 youth volunteers who built 50 houses

The National Youth Development Agency will honour 117 young volunteers who built 50 low cost houses in Winterveldt, Tshwane.

The group was participating in the Tshwane leg of the Youth Build project, a community based National Youth Service programme that offers volunteers a comprehensive programme that integrates academic achievement, work experience, social action, leadership development and personal transformation in a single project.

Volunteers are recruited within identified communities, orientated by the NYDA, trained before they go to sites to build houses. At the end of the project volunteers attend Job Preparedness workshops hosted by the NYDA to prepare them as they exit the programme to look for jobs or start their own businesses based on the skills they’ve acquired through Youth Build.

The Tshwane volunteers will be awarded NQF Level 3 certificates for undergoing training in bricklaying, plastering and plumbing. They also received Basic English and Maths training while group and one-on-one counselling was provided by professional counsellors.

The NYDA partnered with the national and provincial departments of Human Settlements, City of Tshwane, and National Home Builders Registration Council to implement this project.

Participants interested in starting their own businesses have been assisted with registering cooperatives while some were assisted to further their studies.

Deputy Minister of Human Settlements Zou Kota-Fredericks, Gauteng MEC for Local Government and Housing Ntombi Mekgwe and Mayor of Tshwane Kgosientso Ramokgopa are expected to attend the ceremony which will take place as follows:

Date: Tuesday, 30 July 2013
Time: 10h00
