National Library launches book, 28 Nov

Launching a book in honour of Professor Seth Paul Manaka: A visionary south African Librarian

The National Librarian & CEO of the National Library of South Africa and the University of Limpopo Information Studies Programme will launch a book in honour of Professor Seth Paul Manaka. Concurrently, the Information Studies Programme at the University of Limpopo will celebrate its 39-year anniversary. ‘’The provision of information for all as a human right’’. This constitutional principle, interrogated and reflected on by the various contributors in the festschrift, highlights the focus and central theme of each of the essays in this significant book.  It is a fitting tribute to a visionary Librarian and Information professional that Prof Manaka is. He will be honoured in his lifetime at the University of Limpopo where he spent his entire career as a professional librarian and as an academic.

The remarkable book, the first festschrift for a Black librarian in South Africa, offers a challenging and inspiring vision of that change which Seth Manaka strove for, all his life - a vision yet present in South Africa but whose public value is acknowledged and felt in various social movements.

The book launch will be followed by the launch of the Information Studies Programme Alumni Association.
The Information Studies Programme is now 39 years old. It was established by Professor Manaka in 1976.  The alumni of the programme are holding several senior positions in the Library and Information Services (LIS) sector throughout the country and beyond the borders of South Africa.
