Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs to open Parliamentary Portfolio Committee stakeholder workshop on rhino poaching

The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa, will deliver the opening address at the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Water and Environmental Affairs’ workshop on rhino poaching on 2 December 2013.

Rhino poaching across South Africa has risen sharply in the past five years and has threatened to reverse the hard-won population increase achieved by conservation authorities in the past 50 years. In order to address the problem, Government and a number of other role players have initiated various interventions to address the scourge of rhino poaching.

Following several engagements over the past two years between the Portfolio Committee on Water and Environmental Affairs and relevant stakeholders, the Committee will be conducting a follow-up workshop on rhino poaching at Skukuza in the Kruger National Park from 1 to 5 December 2013 with a view to giving impetus to the efforts and commitment towards reducing the scourge of rhino poaching in South Africa.

The media are invited to attend the opening session of the workshop on 2 December 2013 at 08h00.

An opportunity for interviews with the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa, and the Chairman of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Water and the Environment, Adv Johnny de Lange, has been scheduled for 10am.

Please confirm attendance by Friday, 29 November 2013, 5pm to ensure access to the Kruger National Park.
