Minister Lamola to launch inmate Arts and Craft Centre in Klerksdorp
Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola, will on Friday, 19 November 2021, officially launch the Arts and Craft Centre for artwork produced by offenders at the Klerksdorp Correctional Centre, North West.
This Arts and Craft Centre is geared towards professionalization of Arts as part of rehabilitation programmes in the Department of Correctional Services.
Minister Lamola will unpack value proposition as well as available opportunities within the arts industry as it goes beyond just learning. It further relates to recreation and vocation, providing both specific skills that will open doors to creative careers as well as generic and transferable job skills.
Primarily, the Arts and Craft programme is aligned to the Strategic Framework on SelfSufficiency and Sustainability. DCS also wants to attract community members with the requisite skills/expertise to contribute to the development of offenders, parolees and young people in communities, in an effort to combat and prevent crime.
Through arts and craft, inmates will be able to share with the outside world their feelings, life stories and maintain positive relationships. Such will enhance their social standing because they will be getting respect for the artwork that they do.
This is a collaboration project involving the Department of Correctional Services, the City Council of Matlosana, Klerksdorp Museum and the North-West Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC).
