Minister Nathi Mthethwa holds strategic planning session towards 2015 Social Cohesion Report-Back Summit, 30 Jan

The Department of Arts and Culture and Advocates for Social Cohesion will hold a strategic planning session towards 2015 Social Cohesion Report-back Summit on 30-31 January 2015 at the Garden Court Hotel in Kempton Park, Johannesburg.

In 2012, the department convened a National Cohesion Summit in Kliptown, Soweto with the objective to bring different sectors of society to engage in a dialogue and develop strategies in creating a “caring and proud society”. Subsequently, a group of eminent South Africans from different sectors of society (Advocates of Social Cohesion) was formed to promote the ideal of a caring and proud society in various platforms.

The advocates amongst others include Judge Yvonne Mokgoro, Ms Xoliswa Bam from the Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa, Mr Dennis George from labour - Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA), Simphiwe Dana and Professor Willie Esterhuyse, an opinion maker.

The discussion will also focus on the state of social cohesion in the country and implementation of the Social Cohesion Strategy, the National Development Plan as well as issues raised by communities during community conversations that were held around the country to discuss challenges and solutions toward a socially cohesion society. The meeting will also shed light on their plans in relation to current social cohesion-related challenges facing our country. Minister Mthethwa will open the session. Members of the media are invited to attend.
