Minister Naledi Pandor addresses DST-NRF Centres of Excellence Annual Directors' Forum, 13 Nov

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will deliver a keynote address at the Department of Science and Technology-National Research Foundation annual Centres of Excellence (CoEs) Directors' Forum at the Life Sciences Building, University of the Western Cape (UWC), on Thursday, 13 November 2014 at 9h30.

The Annual CoE Directors" Forum is an event in which CoEs make presentations of their work and successes in their key performance areas.

The theme for the 2014 event is "Celebrating Ten Years of Research Excellence".  The theme is informed by the fact that the first cohort of CoEs, founded in 2004, is celebrating 10 years of existence.

Minister Pandor's address will be followed by a brief tour of the exhibition, which will display the work done by various CoEs, including their achievements thus far.

About the DST-NRF CoEs

The CoEs are physical or virtual centres of research that concentrate existing research excellence and capacity and resources to enable researchers to collaborate across disciplines and institutions on long-term projects that are locally relevant and internationally competitive in order to enhance the pursuit of research excellence and capacity development.  The DST-NRF CoE funding instrument was launched in 2004 with the establishment of seven CoEs.  Since then, three additional CoEs were established between 2009 and 2013, with five new CoEs established in 2014.

The five key performance areas of the CoEs are research/knowledge production; education and training; information brokerage; networking; and service rendering.  Over the past decade, the advisory boards for each of the CoEs played an important steering and oversight role in ensuring the success of the CoEs.
