Minister Naledi Pandor to address the opening of the South African Institute of Physics Annual Conference at the University of Johannesburg

At 18h00 this evening the Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will deliver the opening address at the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP) 2014 Annual Conference, scheduled to take place at the University of Johannesburg’s Sanlam Auditorium, E-Ring Building, Auckland Park, Kingsway Campus, Johannesburg.

The SAIP annual conferences have the following objectives:

  • To support human capital development and knowledge generation for South Africa.
  • To showcase and present research from ongoing strategic national and international collaborative projects.
  • To promote international collaboration and the exchange of students in support of international projects such as the Square Kilometre Array, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, the Cherenkov Telescope Array, the SA-CERN partnership and synchrotron facilities.
  • To promote studies and research in physics and related subjects and to encourage the application thereof.
  • To nurture a cohort of young scientists (Physics students usually deliver their first paper at the SAIP annual conference and their first academic publication is usually in the SAIP conference proceedings.)
  • To honour, recognise and reward excellence and outstanding contributions to physics in South Africa.

This evening, in addition to various student prizes, the SAIP will be awarding a De Beers Gold Medal, which is made for a lifetime of achievement in and contribution to physics in South Africa.
