Minister Molewa to open Nandoni Dam and Bulk Distribution Pipieline

The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa will officially open the Nandoni Dam and Bulk distribution Pipeline at Makhuvha stadium in Vhembe District, Limpopo on Wednesday, 28 April 2014 at 09h00. This event will also be attended by Limpopo Premier, Mr Stanley Mathabatha, and his Cabinet.

Nandoni Dam falls within the Luvuvhu River Government Water Scheme (LRGWS). The main purpose of the LRGWS is to supply water for domestic use to the area between Makhado and Punda Maria (Kruger National Park) in the Limpopo province, to about 800 000 people with the potential of reaching 1.1 million people and also for socio-economic development and upliftment of the communities.

The LRGWS mainly consists of the following works:

  • The 163 million m3 gross storage capacity Nandoni dam which was completed during the 2005/06 financial year.
  • The Nandoni water treatment works (WTW) with a first phase capacity of 60,000 m3 /day at the dam.
  • The Xikundu weir and WTW with a first phase capacity of 20,000 m3/day, 30 km downstream of the Nandoni dam.
  • A bulk water distribution scheme, consisting of pump stations, pipelines and command/main reservoirs.

All members of the media are invited to attend. The programme will start at the Dam and end with a community address by the Minister.
