Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi hands over homes in Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Local Municipality, 21 Jul

Government restores dignity of indigents in Mpumalanga

Indigent households in Mpumalanga will receive keys to their newly-built homes on Friday when Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi visits the Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Local Municipality in the Gert Sibande District.

Together with the MEC of Human Settlements in Mpumalanga, Mr Speed Mashilo, they will lead a delegation from all spheres of government to restore the dignity of qualifying beneficiaries, including the elderly. The housing handover will precede a community engagement programme, where over 100 title deeds will be issued to the beneficiaries of fully-subsidized government homes, referred to as Breaking New Ground (BNG). This aligns with the Department’s commitment to facilitate the creation of sustainable human settlements and improved quality of household life.

The BNGs are part of the 500 units of a multi-year informal upgrading project currently being delivered at Vukuzakhe B Township, expected to be completed by the end of March 2024. To date, more than 260 housing units have been completed.

Minister Kubayi, Provincial MECs of Human Settlements and Executive Mayors are also scheduled to meet to discuss performance areas to ensure that the 2023/2024 set targets are achieved. Key items on the agenda for discussion include, amongst others, the state of housing delivery, payment of contractors within 30 days and the 40% allocation of the budget to designated groups.
