The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Adv Michael Masutha, will officially announce the 2014 offender Grade 12 examination results on Wednesday, 7 January 2015.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has placed education, and training, at the centre of its rehabilitation agenda, aimed at eliminating illiteracy, under qualifications as well as the absence of critical technical skills, and competencies, required for employment or self-employment. From 2009 to date, more than 108,321 inmates participated in formal education programmes. From April 2013, it is compulsory for every inmate without a qualification equivalent to Grade 9, to complete Adult Education and Training (AET) level 1 to 4. DCS increased the number of full-time correctional centre schools from one in 2009 to 14 in 2014.From 2011 to 2013, 559 inmates wrote Grade 9 to 11 examinations with an average pass rate of 73% in 2013. Over the years, the number of offenders who wrote Grade 12 examinations doubled and those who gained university admission increased. In 2014, one hundred and eight (108) offenders sat for their Grade 12 examinations with 94 inmates writing full-time and 14 part-time.

After the announcement of the results, the Minister will join offenders at a nearby public school to get the school ready so that proper learning and teaching can commence on the first day of school.
