Minister Mashatile to speak at the White Paper Policy Review Workshop

Arts and Culture Minister, Mr Paul Mashatile will address the arts sector at the Workshop on White Paper Policy Review on the arts, culture and heritage (1996). The workshops will take place on the 04th of September 2013 at Royal Hotel in Durban from 08h00-16h30, followed by another session on the 5th of September 2013 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre between 08h00 and 16h30.

The purpose of the workshop is to consult with the sector on the revised draft White Paper on arts, culture and heritage. This workshop will provide the arts practitioners and administrators with the opportunity to participate and contribute to the revised White Paper.

Since its adoption in 1996, the White Paper has provided key policy framework for the Department and the sector. It has been a seminal document for the transformation and repositioning of the arts, culture and heritage sector in South Africa. This policy has also contributed immensely in the promotion, protection and preservation of the sector including engendering social cohesion and nation building. Through the White Paper, the department has been able to successfully transform the arts sector.

While this policy framework has achieved many of the objectives envisaged, new developments in the sector and in the country at large have necessitated its review. The South African society has been undergoing fundamental transformation over the past years. This review epitomises the Government’s collective effort in working together with its stakeholders to ensure that policies respond effectively to the needs of the people.
