The Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba will on Wednesday, 16 May 2018 launch the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), a new identification system that forms an integral part of the Department’s Modernisation Programme.
ABIS is a future-fit identification and security solution powered by sustainable technology and will offer a single view of citizens across the life cycle and their status change at various stages. It is set to replace the Home Affairs National Identity System (HANIS) which is manually operated and outdated. Home Affairs is undergoing major upgrades in respect of its identification systems. The grand plan seeks to integrate HANIS and the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) into an automated system through ABIS with the capability to identify and verify people through fingerprints, facial recognition and IRIS technology. The ABIS is a fundamental baseline for the broader National Identification System that will consolidate South African and foreign nationals' data into a single base.
Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, Justice and Constitutional Minister, Mike Masutha, National Police Commissioner, General Khehla Sitole and the Acting Divisional Commissioner for Forensic Services, Fingerprints and related Databases in SAPS, Lieutenant General Dumisa Magadlela will attend the launch.
