Minister Malusi Gigaba delivers oration at naturalisation ceremony in Durban, 17 Aug

The Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, will on Friday, 17 August 2018, deliver a ceremonial oration at the Naturalisation Ceremony for foreign nationals who qualify for South African citizenship.

In terms of the legislation, the Minister may grant a certificate of naturalisation in a prescribed manner, including a ceremony, to mark the naturalisation process.

It is expected that 278 foreign nationals, who have been inducted, will receive naturalisation certificates conferred to them by a senior member of the judiciary. Previously, this task was performed by Gauteng Judge President, Dustan Mlambo.

The Naturalisation Ceremony has been successfully hosted by the Department on two occasions – in 2016 and 2017. Successful naturalisation applicants will take an oath or affirmation to the South African constitution, its laws and its democratic values.

In addition, the new citizens will publicly pledge their loyalty and commitment to the Republic. To this end, the naturalisation ceremony, as mandated by the Citizenship Act, intends to introduce the new citizens to the South African community.
