Minister Dlamini to engage Tlokwe Community on service delivery improvements

The Minister for Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini, will conduct a follow-up visit to Tlokwe, North West province, in order to identify areas for further service delivery improvements in the municipality based on the challenges uncovered during her first visit to the area on 2 August.

The visit forms part of Project Mikondzo - a service delivery improvement initiative aimed at improving access to the Department and its entities’ (the South African Social Security Agency and National Development Agency) services in the poorest wards of the country. According to the General Household Survey (GHS) of 2010, food access problems were most serious in North West province where 33,3% of households had inadequate or severely inadequate food access.

The department has recently held a second round of community dialogues in Ikageng, representing twelve wards, to hear first-hand from the community of their challenges and identify areas of intervention. The dialogues revealed that challenges facing the community include high rates of unemployment leading to poverty, the challenge of substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, crime, rape, gang violence as well as the misuse of the child support grant.

The Minister will engage the community on these challenges and, together with them, find ways to address the challenges in a sustainable manner.

Members of the media are invited to join Minister Dlamini on her visit to the area.
