Minister Dipuo Peters will announce South Africa’s excellent performance in the recent International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) coordinated validation mission

Transport Minister, Honourable Dipuo Peters, will officially announce the outcome of the ICAO Coordinated Validation Mission which was undertaken by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) from 24 – 30 July 2013. The Minister will be joined by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga and the acting Director of Civil Aviation, Mr. Gawie Bestbier.

ICAO is a specialised agency of the United Nations, with many functions, supporting all aspects of international civil aviation. Of paramount importance is the setting of aviation safety and security standards and recommended practices. ICAO brings together States to determine areas of strategic priority; develop policies and standards and coordinate global monitoring of States performance as required by set standards. As a member State to the ICAO Chicago Convention of 1944, South Africa is expected to comply with the Standards and Recommended Practices of ICAO, whilst considering the local context.

The main focus of this audit was to verify South Africa’s level of compliance to ICAO aviation safety standards with more emphasis on the previous audit findings that were raised during a similar exercise in 2007. During the on-site mission, the ICAO team evaluated documents and collected evidence of the progress made by South Africa in implementing the country’s corrective action plans.
