Minister Nzimande to lead the opening of the South West TVET College Trade Test Centre and TVET Month Celebration
The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, invites members of the media to the opening of the Occupational Qualifications Electricians Trade Test Centre and the Celebration of Artisan Month that will be held at the South West Gauteng TVET College - Roodepoort West Campus.
The South West TVET college will be joining other TVET Colleges offering trade test occupations following its accreditation by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) to offer Artisan Programmes such as Welding, Electricians, Fitter and Turner etc.
A trade test is a final integrated summative assessment for an artisan qualification for a listed trade that is conducted at an accredited Trade Test Centre by an Assessor registered with National Artisan Moderating Body.
In the South Africa context, the QCTO is a Quality Council established in 2010 in terms of the Skills Development Act Nr. 97 of 1998.
The role of the QCTO is to oversee the design, implementation, assessment and certification of occupational qualifications, including trades, on the Occupational Qualifications Sub-Framework (OQSF).
The QCTO also offers guidance to skills development providers who must be accredited by the QCTO to offer occupational qualifications.
The event will also mark the celebration of the TVET month, which is held to demystify the mind-sets of those that regard TVET College programmes as inferior because vocational education and training plays a critical role in skill development and employability.
Minister Nzimande will be joined by the leadership of the TVET sector nationally and provincially, including the management of the South West TVET College, Student leadership, Labour unions, SETA leadership and business leadership associated with the college.
