The Minister of Transport, Dr. Blade Nzimande will close the Department of Transport’s October Transport Month campaign for 2018 with the official launch of the long awaited and much anticipated world-class Mt. Edgecombe Interchange on Tuesday, 30th October 2018.
The award-winning Mt. Edgecombe Interchange is more than a masterpiece of architecture. It is a vital artery of the greater eThekwini Metropolitan highway system for easing traffic, relieving congestion and is also a significant enabler of business.
This world-class infrastructure was completed in July 2018 with the intersection becoming another construction achievement to be added to the list of iconic bridge structures undertaken in KwaZulu-Natal by the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL).
Traffic congestion resulting in vehicles backing up on the M41 and onto the N2 affecting some 40 000 vehicles during peak hours has already become a feature of the past with the Interchange having changed the landscape of the province and country.
It is no doubt sure to become a well-known landmark in the Republic henceforth.
The construction of one of the longest structures ever built over one of the busiest intersections in KwaZulu-Natal successfully, without closing any of the interlinking roads permanently, is testimony to the success of the genius construction methods, material and architecture in recent road construction and engineering.
Minister Nzimande will be joined during the official opening of the Interchange by the Deputy Minister of Transport Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Honourable Willies Mchunu, the Executive Mayor of eThekwini Councillor Zandile Gumede, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Community Safety Mxolisi Kaunda, SANRAL CEO Skhumbuzo Macozoma, key transport stakeholders and senior national and provincial government officials and members of the community.
