Transport Minister escalates road safety over long weekend in Port Elizabeth

The Minister of Transport, Dr Blade Nzimande and MEC for Transport and Safety in the Eastern Cape, Ms. Weziwe Tikana will lead various road safety activation programmes on Monday, 30 April 2018 in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape.

The activations forms part of the long weekend period which covers Freedom Day on Friday, 27 April and Workers’ Day celebrations on 1 May respectively.

Minister Nzimande’s visit to the Eastern Cape follows the release of the 2018 Preliminary Easter Road Rafety report in Cape Town last week.

The report indicated that the province had the fourth highest fatalities in the country with 59 people having lost their lives.

The Minister will start the day by visiting families of people who lost loved ones to road crashes and beneficiaries of the Road Accident Fund (RAF), a post crash consoling arm of government.

Minister Nzimande will also engage with motorists, passengers and pedestrians at different spots, highlighting and emphasising the importance of their safety on the road during the long weekend.

The Minister and MEC will be joined by CEOs of the department’s road entities and law enforcement officers.

1. Road Safety Education & Awareness Drive

2. Minister and MEC visit to RAF MVA beneficiaries

Time: 12:00-13:00
Venue: Missionvale, Port Elizabeth

3. Visit to RAF claim settlement centre

Time: 12:00 – 13:00
Venue: Raymond Mhlaba Indoor Sport Centre
