Conference on building infrastructure and capacity in Higher Education: lessons from China and South Africa

The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, will deliver the keynote address at the upcoming conference on building infrastructure and capacity in higher education. The conference aims to bring together experts from China and South Africa to share their experiences in infrastructure and capacity building in Higher Education.

The conference will comprise of three themes. The first will focus on ‘hard’ infrastructure – the planning, construction and maintenance of campuses. The second theme will focus on ‘soft’ infrastructure, namely investments in human capacity with regard to curriculum and programme development.

In recognition of the celebration of the ‘Year of South Africa in China’, this theme will include a focus on China-Africa joint educational cooperation, as well as the role of Confucius Institutes in South Africa. The third theme will focus on sustainability issues in Higher Education, covering topics such as financial, environmental and human capital sustainability.

The cumulative result will be a mutual learning exercise in educational capacity building as well as an opportunity to forge new networks and partnerships. The anticipated output of the conference will be an edited volume of the proceedings, which will serve as a reference for planners, teachers and other practitioners.

The department will launch a book titled “Woza Sizokwakha - Building Higher Education: Infrastructure Renewal, Revitalisation and Development" at a gala dinner that will take place on 26 November 2014.
