Police Minister Bheki Cele is due to make major announcements in resolving ongoing taxi violence in Umthatha 

Police Minister Bheki Cele will tomorrow (27 March 2018) announce an emergency intervention plan with the aim of resolving Taxi violence in UMthatha and surrounding areas in the Eastern Cape. The ongoing taxi feud has claimed many lives of both taxi operators and commuters since it erupted in 2016.

The Minister will be joined by the provincial leadership in the Eastern Cape led by the MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ms Weziwe Tikana and SAPS Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga. The Minister's intervention follows extensive engagements and operations embarked upon by the province in resolving the issues involving the taxi operators of Uncedo Services Taxi Association and Border Alliance Taxi Association.

The fundamental mandate of the police is to maintain law and order and to further arrest any criminal elements that threaten the safety of South Africans.
