Minister Bathabile Dlamini meets families of Marikana victims, 24 Oct

Minister Dlamini to hold a follow-up meeting with families of people who lost their lives in Marikana

The Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini, will hold a follow-up meeting, in Nyandeni, Eastern Cape, with the families of  people who lost their lives in the Marikana tragedy.

The meeting is aimed at assessing progress made with regards to the interventions the Department of Social Development had committed to in June 2013 as well as identify further areas for intervention in supporting the families, and the community at large, to achieve sustainable livelihoods through Project Mikondzo – a service delivery improvement programme aimed at responding quicker, more effectively and innovatively to social challenges in the country’s poorest areas.

The traditional leadership of the area is also expected to engage Minister Dlamini further on a support programme for young men who lose their manhood during traditional initiation.  While it was important to curb deaths during initiation, it is also equally important to provide support to those who survive but are left mutilated.

The visit forms part of the Social Development Month (October) outreach programme, through which the Department aims to increase access to and utilisation of social services through direct intervention by building effective service delivery partnerships between government, communities and other role players.
