In an effort to address high levels of poverty and unemployment ravaging rural women in Port St John’s, MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison Helen Sauls-August will officially unveil a women’s build programme which includes handing over school library, computers, school uniform, home furniture, new homes, and awarding of bursaries to the distressed villagers on the completion of the project in August.
About 57 rural women will benefit from the women’s build project aimed at commemorating the heroic efforts of 1956 women’s march, whilst alleviating poverty levels in the area. Building 57 houses for the destitute women in Port St John’s to mark the 57 years of women struggle is currently underway. Port St John’s has been identified due to the fact that it has a project of 110 destitute elderly persons has been approved to a woman contractor.
The beneficiaries are currently living with neighbours, others on collapsing mud structures, leaking shacks during rainy days. Children have to sleep on the floor, go to school without a meal or walk to school barefoot.
