MEC Phophi Ramathuba hosts Cancer Awareness Day, 5 May

Health MEC Dr. Phophi Ramathuba will host a Cancer Awareness Day. During the event, the MEC together with other health officials will be giving information about different kinds of cancers and treatment. Cancer is the second leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases around the globe.

In South Africa, breast cancer is the most common cancer for women, but cervical cancer is the deadliest, with 5 406 female deaths in 2015. Other top cancer causes of death for women are, lung, and colo-rectal cancers.

For men, prostate cancer resulted in the highest number of new cases, but lung cancer remain the number one killer, causing 5 726 male deaths.

The cancers most prevalent amongst South African children are leukemia, brain tumours, lymphomas, cancer of the kidney.

It is against this background that the department invites the media to the awareness event which will be held as follows:
