MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube conducts mass informal settlements sanitisation programme in uThukela District, 30 Apr

As the Province accelerates its efforts to flatten the Covid-19 curve, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube will also embark on a mass informal settlements sanitisation in the uThukela District at the Alfred Duma Local Municipality.

The move is part of an intensive programme to sanitise informal settlements which continue to pose a high risk since the virus thrives in conditions where people live in density.

Dube-Ncube is the uThukela District MEC Champion under Operation Sukuma Sakhe. The Covid-19 Informal Settlements Sanitisation Programme is aimed at flattening the spread of the virus in densely populated communities.

The multi-pronged programme also entails screening and testing for the symptoms of the Coronavirus that the district municipal, health and EDTEA teams have been involved in for the better part of the month of April.

“UThukela is one of the priority district and serious efforts have been undertaken to fight the coronavirus and stopping potentially deadly transmission among our people. We understand that the latest data as revealed by the Minister of Health, Dr [Zweli] Mkhize does not auger well for us a province. A lot needs to be done for us to turn the corner. Apart from mass screening and mass sanitisation, there really is a great need for constant education and awareness campaign to fight Covid-19. I am confident we will prevail over this,” said Dube-Ncube.

Dube-Ncube, accompanied by District and Local Municipal Mayors, Health and Human Settlements officials will participate in the mass sanitisation.

While the meeting point will be uThukela District Health offices, the mass sanitisation will commence at Ward 10 in Thembalihle Informal settlement whilst other teams assisted by EPWP workers will depart to Qwaqwa Informal Settlement and Okhahlamba Shack Dwellers for mass sanitisation programme.
