MEC Mohono celebrates her birthday by reviving Home Based Care Centre vegetable garden

Tapologo Home Based Care Centre in Phokeng village outside Rustenburg will on Monday, 28 October 2013, be the beneficiary of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s food security programme, as the MEC Desbo Mohono whose birthday is on 28 October, will be re-establishing the centre’s vegetable garden.

MEC Mohono is expected to also hand over a shade net for the vegetable garden, tools, seeds and fertilisers, as well as 100 layer chickens and mash to the centre. The centre which was founded in 1997 has eleven other satellite centres around the Rustenburg area, and it is expected that vegetables to be produced will feed these satellite centres.

Mohono says her department has since the beginning of October which has been set aside as Food Security and Older Persons’ month, intensified its campaign on one family - one food garden, saying “a collective effort to address food insecurity and malnutrition among the society is crucial, and providing help for the vulnerable communities cannot be ignored.”

Mohono who will be joined by MmeMogolo Semane Molotlegi of Royal Bafokeng Nation and older persons from around the North West Province, will start planting vegetables from 9h00. Members of the Kgora Food Security project who were last week recognised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nation for their efforts in producing quality vegetables, will also attend the event and share their successes and experiences with the Tapologo Home Based Care centre managers.

This centre was early this month visited by the Hon Deputy President, Kgalema Mothanthe who was accompanied by the Premier, Mme Thandi Modise, during which the need for the revitalisation of the centre’s garden was identified.

Members of the media are invited.
