MEC Helen Sauls-August goes on a mission to stop housing corruption
Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Ms Helen Sauls-August is going on a door to door mission in Gariep Municipality to probe and verify correct allocation and occupation of government subsidy houses.
The visit is part of a province wide programme to deal with housing corruption that has robbed qualifying people of their homes.
Since 1994, the Provincial Eastern Cape Government has built 368 000 free subsidy housing units for people who earn less than R3501 or no income at all, impacting on the lives of almost 1.3 million people of the 6.5 million provincial population.
Between 2009 to 2014 alone the department built 68 185 housing units reaching 286 377 households. Despite this remarkable work, the department is bedeviled by the illegal sales, allocations and occupation of free government subsidy housing units which has condemned many qualifying and deserving people into homelessness while those with means to buy their own homes have occupied the houses meant for the poor through fraudulent means. The door to door programme will be preceded by the formal public hearing on the 27 February at Mzamomhle Community Hall, Burgersdorp.
