MEC for Health to take part in Mandela Day activities

Gauteng MEC for Health Qedani Mahlangu will tomorrow, Friday 18 July join the country in celebration of Mandela Day at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic.

This day follows a request by the President of the country for the public to spare at least 67 minutes of their time by doing something useful within their communities - especially among the less fortunate.

At Charlotte Maxeke, MEC Mahlangu will assist in painting of ICU counselling rooms.

MEC Mahlangu will also be handing out books and reading to children in the wards, assist in gardening, distribution of soup as well as cleaning in Speech Therapy Unit.

At Leratong Hospital, 96 cataract operations will be performed on patients from across the province by the Islamic Association and Pakistan Community of South Africa to help reduce the backlog of cataract operations. (Hospital PRO: Fikile Mbhele: 073 309 9391)

Other activities for the day will include puppet show and storytelling. Donation of toys, pyjamas and gowns by Eskom foundation at the pediatric ward at Natalspruit Hospital (Hospital PRO: Vuyo Sabani: 073 360 8133)

The West Rand Health District will treat about 100 elderly people from old age homes around Randfontein at Randgate Community Hall. The senior citizens will be pampered with Pedicure, manicure and massages. Officials will also clean and deliver food parcels around the area (Regional PRO: Sandile Gwayi on 082 491 2101)

At Helen Joseph Hospital, the hospital management, University of Johannesburg students as well as staff from Egoli gas will donate books to the hospital crèche.
