MEC Butana Komphela to launch Decade of Action for Road Safety Campaign

The MEC for Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State honourable Butana Komphela will launch the 2013 festive season Decade of Action for Road Safety Campaign at N1 Kroonstad, near Shell Ultra City on Tuesday, 3 December 2013 at 10h00.

Road traffic fatalities are amongst the main causes of death in South Africa. This results in serious social and economic costs for the country. These consequences include the loss of family members, bread winners and leave behind traumatised families. The economic ramifications include the increase in the social development and health budgets spent.

In his speech the MEC is expected to call upon all road users, Public transport operators, motorists, passengers and pedestrians to take personal responsibility for their safety on the roads. The MEC is also expected to elaborate on the Provincial law enforcement plan for the Festive season.

In the Free State, the festive season programme is not implemented in isolation, but forms part of an ongoing programme of campaigns that the department and law enforcement agencies carried out in conjunction with transport stakeholders and the general public throughout the year to ensure that lives are saved.
