Mandela Day Programme to be celerated at Eldorado Park

The sport and arts and culture sector will, this coming Thursday, 18 July, carry out a massive Mandela Day programme at the Krematart Park in Eldorado Park Extension 2, through a partnership between the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Sport and Recreation South Africa and the City of Joburg.

This will see Minister Fikile Mbalula, MEC Lebogang Maile and other MECs leading in giving their 67 minutes in honour of the world icon Nelson Mandela. Among others they will volunteer their services by painting the local Andries Meyer Old Age Home adjacent to the Krematart Park.

They’ll be joined by well-known celebrities and artists, Springboks, netball and Bafana Bafana teams, soccer legends including the likes of Willington Manyathi, swimmers, staff from the partnering departments and the local sports council among others who’ll all be there to lend their hand in improving the lives of the targeted communities.

“This intervention at Eldorado Park is also meant to ensure that sport continues because we know its potential to bring people together and what more can we ask when this is pursued as part of the Mandela Day initiative” says Maile.

Minister Mbalula will also hand over sporting gear and equipment to 10 identified schools (primary and secondary) within Eldorado Park and the surrounding areas.

Besides painting, the Old Age Home will also receive appropriate sporting equipment as part of government’s Active Ageing programme. Also to benefit is the local crèche across the Old Age Home which will receive children’s books as part of the Born to Read programme.

Krematart Park will itself get a facelift with the two mini soccer fields upgraded with an artificial grass.  The High Performance Centre will also be around to showcase how to use the outside gym facilities in the park.

Other activities of the day include:

  • Fun walk
  • Coaching clinics
  • Five aside soccer
  • Motivational talks
