With the Magnificent Fridays campaign hitting Maponya Mall this Friday, Gauteng’s Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Lebogang Maile will hope to use the event to raise Sowetans’ excitement levels over next year’s tournament, which will also see its opening and closing matches held at the FNB Stadium in Soweto.
The Gauteng provincial government is using the Magnificent Fridays campaign to drum up support for the 2013 Afcon, with the aim of building on the tremendous wave of national pride that South Africa experienced during 'Football Fridays' that were celebrated during the 2010 FIFA World Cup and also mobilizing communities to rally behind Bafana Bafana and the tournament.
“With the excitement of the massive Soweto Derby this weekend, we want to build on this exhilarating football spirit and urge supporters to buy their tickets for the Afcon tournament and to support the national team,” said Maile
Maile added: “Just as the ‘Real McCoy’ will rein victorious between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs this Saturday, Africa’s champion will also be crowned on the same venue in February and we want to urge supporters to pack the games and ensure that it is Bafana Bafana who are crowned champions.”
The provincial government will also continue to use the campaign to educate communities about the national symbols and the anthem. Activities on the day will include 5-a-side football, action cricket, touch rugby, indigenous games and water safety exhibitions. Crowds will be entertained with performances by top South African artists.
