Limpopo Government and the Catholic Church tackle human trafficking
The Limpopo Provincial Government led by Premier Chupu Stanley Mathabatha will partner with the Roman Catholic Church in Polokwane to raise awareness about human trafficking of women and children. Human trafficking is a modern day slavery that affects the entire world and South Africa’s young democracy is tackling the scourge head on. Many African young women are being lured under the pretext of job opportunities offering luxury accommodation and salaries between 10 – 20 000 dollars, only to be exploited for commercial sex and forced labour.
Through the testimony of Josephina Bakita – a Sudanese Sister who suffered the pains of being trafficked at a young age of seven – the Catholic Church started a campaign to raise awareness against Human Trafficking. Josephine Bakita was sold and resold five times. She later moved to Italy and became a Religious Sister. Limpopo Provincial Government is committed to partnering with Faith Based Organisation to raise awareness and ensure safety and protection of women and children from any form of abuse.
We call on parents and guardians to be on the lookout for any suspicious people rooming the streets. We also make an appeal to our children to always verify job opportunities offered on the internet to avoid falling prey to these scavengers.
