Limpopo hosts Provincial Heritage Day Celebration 2018

The Limpopo Provincial Government will join the rest of the country in celebrating the 2018 Heritage Day. In line with government’s programme to celebrate the centenary year of Tata Nelson Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu, Heritage Month 2018 will be commemorated under the theme “The Year of Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela: Advancing Transformation of South Africa’s Heritage Landscape”.

In the past, the majority of people were alienated from managing and preserving their own heritage. This deprived them the freedom to bequeath to upcoming generations the knowledge and skills to lead meaningful lives. At the advent of democracy, the Arts and Culture Task Group was mandated to reconfigure the arts and culture landscape to redress past imbalances and reflect an inclusive democratic South Africa.

The celebrations over Heritage Month will consist of the active participation of museums, galleries, libraries, archives, community art centres to highlight the importance of transformation of the heritage landscape. The people of Limpopo are encouraged to visit these institutions to contribute to their sustainability and relevance in addressing societal challenges. Citizens are further encouraged to participate in community dialogues which will be held at those heritage institutions.

In Limpopo, government will celebrate the cultural wealth of the province by showcasing cultural diversity. The 2018 Heritage day celebration will be held as follows;

Date: 24 September 2018
Venue: Tjate Heritage Site; Fetakgomo - Tubatse Municipality, Sekhukhune District
Time : 09:00

Government calls on all sectors to use our liberation heritage as a vehicle to foster social cohesion, nation building, economic development and inclusive citizenship. The liberation heritage was forged in the theatre of struggle that shaped the new South Africa and can be actively used to contribute to the revival of social and political consciousness in our country.
