Launch of Women's Build to commemorate Women's Month

Kwa-Zulu-Natal MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works RR Pillay together with Deputy Minister of Human Settlements Ms Z. Kota-Fredericks, Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture R. Mabudafhasi and the Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Councillor J. Nxumalo will launch the 2014 Women’s Build campaign at Kingsburgh West, south-west of Durban under the theme: “Moving Women in Human Settlements Economic Empowerment Forward.”

Hundred volunteers comprising primarily of young women will build houses during Women’s month (August) for the elderly, women and child-headed households to commemorate the 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings against the Apartheid pass laws.

Women’s Build is a Letsema project coordinated annually by the Department of Human Settlements during Women’s Month. It is a partnership project between Government, the private sector and the community to raise consciousness about the construction sector and the women’s role in it. It also promotes volunteerism and women’s access to human settlements economic opportunities.

The build will also fast track human settlements delivery in Kingsburgh West, create support structures and build the capacity of the unemployed youth and women in the area. Tomorrow’s launch will commence with a Stakeholders Breakfast at Protea Karridene Hotel at 8h00 followed by a brick-laying session by the two Deputy Ministers, MEC, Mayor and members of eThekwini Municipality Executive Committee members on site where the Build will take place at Kingsburgh West.

Thereafter the Ministerial entourage will address members of the community formally launching the 2014 Women’s Build.

On Women’s Day, Saturday 9 August 2014, President Jacob Zuma accompanied by Human Settlements Minister Ms Lindiwe Sisulu, KwaZulu-Natal Premier, MEC Pillay and eThekwini Municipality Mayor will also partake in the build when they visit the Kingsburgh West to do a brick-laying session as part of the Women’s Month activities prior to the main National Women’s Day official event at Umlazi’s King Zwelithini Stadium.

The houses to be built by the volunteers will be handed over to the identified beneficiaries on the 30th of August by Minister Sisulu. Members of the media are invited to cover this milestone event in women empowerment. Transport for journalists from central Durban to Kingsburgh West and back to Durban on Friday has been arranged.
