Just like the French words, maitre'd, concierge and patissier, the term sommelier will soon also become better known in the hospitality industry. Also known as a wine steward, this is a much sought after skill in the culinary world.
The National Department of Tourism has invested an amount of R11 million and appointed the Cape Wine Academy to present a 12 months training programme for 200 previously unemployed young people between the ages of 18 to 34 years in the following modules - the Wine Service course, Preliminary Wine Course, Certificate Wine Course, Front of House, Marketing and the Wines of the World Course.
