Labour Minister Oliphant to host Domestic Workers Imbizo in the Eastern Cape

Labour Minister, Honourable Mildred Oliphant will host a Domestic Workers Imbizo, part of an initiative to address the plight of the vulnerable workers in South Africa.

The latest Domestic Imbizo is the third since Oliphant initiated the programme to engage with Domestic Workers. Oliphant uses the Izimbizo to interact with workers on matters of working conditions; general rights of workers; effects of legislation on the workers; and extension of social security benefits to workers such as the Unemployment Insurance Fund, the Compensation of Injuries and Disabilities Act, and pension benefits.

Last year Oliphant addressed Domestic Workers at Mandela Park Stadium in Khayelitsha, Western Cape. Two weeks ago she met with an estimated 2000 Domestic Workers at the Durban’s (Ethekwini) City Hall.

In terms of the Sectoral Determination that governs the working conditions of employment in the sector, Domestic Workers include those who work in private household; people employed by employment services; independent contractors who are doing domestic work; a person doing gardening in a private home; people who look after children, sick, or old people and people with disabilities in a private home; and a person driving for the household.

The upcoming Imbizo will be held on (Sunday) 6 April 2014 at Mdantsane’s NU 10 Stadium. The Imbizo will be held from 10h00 to 14h00.

Media is invited to attend the Imbizo.
