Labour hosts hazard installation workshop, 4 Dec

Department of Labour partners Polokwane Municipality to host a major hazard installation workshop to advocate for health and safety in workplace

The Department of Labour together with the Polokwane Municipality are to play host to a Major Hazard Installation (MHI) workshop to help educate stakeholders on the importance of preventing major catastrophic incidents in the workplace. The workshop will be held at the Press Theater, Peter Mokaba Soccer Stadium. The workshop will be held on 4 December 2014, it will start at 9am. More than 150 delegates are scheduled to attend the workshop.

The workshop is part of the Department of Labour’s advocacy campaigns towards zero harm and to ensure safe workplaces. Some of the issues to be discussed relate to: risk assessment, MHI regulations, emergency readiness plans, case studies from local authority and occupational health and safety. 

Major Hazard Installations refers to - "installations where any substance is produced, processed, used, handled or stored in such a form and quantity that it has the potential to cause a major incident or an occurrence of catastrophic proportions, resulting from the use of plant and machinery, or from activities at a workplace”.

The Major hazard installations are most commonly/typically: petrochemical works/facilities and refineries, chemical works and production plants, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) stores and terminals, chemical stores and distribution centres,  large fertilizer stores, chlorine used/stored in bulk,  ammonia used/stored in bulk … to mention but a few of the common installations.
