KwaZulu-Natal Premier bids farewell to medical students going to Cuba

KwaZulu-Natal, Premier, Mr Senzo Mchunu will bid farewell to 300 medical students going to Cuba on an Expanded Medical Training Programme, an initiative aimed at intensifying the provision of medical doctors in the public healthcare facilities throughout the province.

Accompanying the Premier, will be the MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo; who will present the 300 students to Premier Mchunu. MEC Dhlomo will depart to Cuba together with the medical students, whereby during his presence in Cuba; he will engage Cuban authorities on various matters related to the training programme and also visit Cuban Universities to assess progress on the KwaZulu-Natal and South African medical students studying in Cuba.

Prior to the departure, the medical students will participate in an intensive orientation programme led by qualified doctors who had previously been students in Cuba and they now work in our public healthcare facilities. This orientation programme assists students to familiarize themselves with the living environment in Cuba, political landscape of this country, socio-economic conditions and matters pertaining to their academic years.

During the orientation programme, students are also briefed and reminded of their obligations to the Cuban country, their country South Africa, their Province KwaZulu-Natal, their communities and their families.
