Invite to the livestock branding campaign

The Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) will be launching a branding campaign for livestock on 22 August 2013. This campaign is aimed at curbing stock theft in the Chris Hani area especially Ngcobo which has the highest number of stock theft in the province.

The campaign is an intervention by the department after various cases of stock theft reported in the area. The department through it veterinary services section will be engaged in the branding exercise of the livestock in this area.  This will also be followed by the launch of a dipping co-operative by the community and the introduction of new data capturing of livestock.

The system will assist the department in registering birth certificates of livestock and the medical history of our livestock as a way of having information of the animals.

The department will also introduce medical cards which will have history of the dipping dates for the cattle thus will form part of the livestock improvement  programme which the department is involved in.

Veterinary services has already procured  branding equipment at an amount  of R1 million with 203 complete sets for cattle and 303 tattooing sets for small stock (goat and sheep). DRDAR has further allocated R12 million budgeted for the province as pronounced in this year’s policy speech with R1.8 million for the Chris Hani district.
