International Relations Committee talks South Africa-Cuba relations

The Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation will tomorrow (14 August 2013) host a dialogue on South Africa-Cuba relations.

Committee Chairperson, Mr Tisetso Magama, says the engagement will focus on, among others, economic relations emanating from the Economic Cooperation Agreement signed between the two countries whose prospects to take off have been slowed down due to the nature of the Cuban economy.

Another hindrance stifling the said economic relations, according to Mr Magama, was largely due to the United States of America’s economic sanctions on Cuba. The discussions will also focus on successes and challenges regarding the implementation of the processes aimed at kick-starting economic processes in Cuba and the possible role South African can play in realising these relations.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation, the Cuban ambassador to South Africa, and other interest groups are expected to participate in the dialogue.
