Human Rights Commission assess the observance of the rights of people with disabilities and older persons in Mpumalanga, 3 to 6 Feb

The Commissioner responsible for the rights of People with Disabilities and Older Persons in the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Commissioner Adv. Bokankatla Malatji, will be conducting a Provincial Visit in Mpumalanga Province from 03 February 2020 to 06 February 2020.

The purpose of the visit is to assess the observance of the rights of People with Disabilities and Older Persons, and to strengthen cooperation between the SAHRC, the Mpumalanga Provincial Government, relevant organs of state, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders involved in the protection and promotion of the rights of People with Disabilities and Older Persons.  

As part of his provincial visit, Commissioner Malatji aims to:

  • Promote the rights of People with Disabilities and Older Persons;
  • Conduct inspections in loco at selected Old Age/Retirement Homes, Special schools, Prisons housing Inmates with Disabilities;  
  • Intervene in complaints relating to People with Disabilities and Older Persons;
  • Address a Dialogue by stakeholders in the Disability and Older Persons sectors on Inclusivity and the rights of People with Disability & Older Persons to Equality;
  • Meet the Department of Social Development, various NGOs and relevant stakeholders working on the rights of People with Disabilities and Older Persons in the Province to understand their programmes as well challenges that they face in their wok;
  • Foster a continuing working relationship between the SAHRC and other stakeholders in the sector.
