Young women of today must begin to claim their space in traditional male dominated areas of expertise so that they can also make a positive contribution to the South Africa economy. This was the view expressed by the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mduduzi Manana, MP, when he kicked off his August Women’s Month Programme last week.
Under the theme Ke nako basadi: Ons kan dit ook doen, the Deputy Minister, in partnership with the Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources, Godfrey Oliphant, MP, and the Mining Qualifications Authority, will launch the Apply Now/Khetha Career Guidance Campaign and Women in Mining Programme in the Northern West Province area of Coligny.
Through this programme, the Deputy Minister will address girl high schools and inform them of different career choices in the mining industry as well as available application procedures for post school and training institutions.
“South Africa has been characterised by a myriad of discriminatory practices against women which have made them to be the biggest victims of unfair policies. Young women in particular have become the least represented in areas of scarce and critical skills and there is a need for government and its socio economic partners to redress these imbalances,” says the Deputy Minister.

Note to editors: During the month of August, the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training will undertake working visits to four Girls’ High Schools to outline various opportunities available for women in areas of scarce and critical skills. This will be done in partnership with institutions that offer training and support on these particular areas. The visits will focus on Maritime, Mining, Rail and Aviation.
