Higher Education Committee to conduct oversight visit to the NSFAS

Members of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training will tomorrow morning (Wednesday, 17 September 2014) conduct an oversight visit to the headquarters of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) in Wynberg, Cape Town.

This visit will afford the MPs an opportunity to assess the implementation and effectiveness of the NSFAS’s new student-centred model. According to the Committee Chairperson, Ms Yvonne Phosa, this model will enable the scheme to have direct contact with the students they fund in order to increase efficiency and fast-track the transfer of funds to students.

Ms Phosa said: “The model will also assist significantly to prevent the submissions of fraudulent information by students who are not eligible to receive financial aid since all information will be verified with other government agencies, including the South African Revenue Services and the Departments of Home Affairs and Social Development.”

Meanwhile, the committee reiterates its call for harmonious negotiations between the management and Student Representative Councils at the institutions of higher learning currently experiencing protests to ensure such protests do not prolong and negatively impede the preparations for the year-end examinations.
