Health and Bongi Ngema-Zuma Foundation join hands to raise Diabetes Awareness in rural communities

The Department of Health in partnership with the Bongi Ngema-Zuma Foundation will commemorate World Diabetes Day with a series of activities to create Diabetes awareness and promote Healthy Lifestyles. This event will take place at the Mabunda Administration Complex KaNgove in Giyani.

The need for every citizen from across all race, age and culture to adopt a healthy lifestyle is fundamental if we want to see a healthy and strong South Africa. It is with this understanding that the Foundation has strategically partnered with the Department of Health in an effort to assist Government in raising awareness about this killer disease.

The Deputy Minister for Health, Dr. G. Ramokgopa will on the day lead by example and participate in the range of activities as part of the awareness creation programme.

Rural communities are as affected by this illness and other related diseases as urban ones. This reality has strengthened efforts by partners and prompted Hosi Penny Ngove, the Chief of the Ngove Royal Institute to rally behind this vision by endorsing the idea to host and partake in the 2013 commemoration.

Recently in South Africa a study called the SANHANES was completed and it was found that for people 45-54 16.7% had sugar levels needing treatment and in the 55-64 year age group 24.4% had such sugar levels. The problem however is that these problems start when a person is much younger, hence it is advised to prevent diabetes when you get older is to start living a healthy lifestyle while you are young.
