Govt to launch Bucket Eradication Program and open new residential settlement

National Minister of Human Settlements, Ms Connie September and Provincial MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison Helen Sauls-August will launch the Bucket Eradication Program in Makana that will see thousands of bucket toilets replaced with flushing toilets. They will also open a new residential settlement in Grahamstown built closer to economic, social amenities.

Currently, the number of buckets in Province’s formal areas stands at 2 827. For informal areas a process to concretely qualify the exact number is still underway this will be dealt with as the phase 2 of the bucket eradication programme. The bucket eradication will start in formal areas then on informal areas. Construction has already started in Makana area. It is a government program intended to eradicate bucket system, pit toilets and provide proper sanitation, thus restoring dignity of the people.
