Orange day background

United Nations has proclaimed the 25th of every month as Orange Day and the campaign is led by the UNiTE Global Youth Network. UNiTE strives to highlight the issue of violence against women and girls every month. Orange Day aims to spark worldwide interest and conversation, highlight the fact that violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights and call for its eradication without reservation, equivocation or delay.

The overarching aim of orange day is to bring one of the most pervasive forms of human rights violations to the forefront of the public’s attention, highlighting the need to all to take action against a growing and horrific epidemic. In recent years various communities in Cape Town have consistently experienced widespread incidents of rapes and murders of women, gays and lesbian, and government aims to start dialogue with citizens and form partnerships with community stakeholders involved in the protection of the rights of gays, lesbians, transgender individuals and women.

In her visit to Khayelitsha, the Minister is expected to be joined by Deputy Minister of Police, Ms Maggy Sotyu, Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Ms Zou Kota, as well as officials from the South African Police Services, Justice, Home Affairs and Social Development departments, who will render various types of support to victims of violence in the community.
