Gender Commission joins oversight visit by Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities in Mpumalanga, 18 Apr

The Portfolio Committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities led by Honourable Chairperson Nonhlanhla Ndaba will on Tuesday, 18 April 2023, meet with the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) led by Chairperson Advocate Nthabiseng Sepanya – Mogale. CGE will accompany the Committee on oversight visits to a police station and Thuthuzela Care Centre around Mbombela. 

The purpose of the visit is to monitor the level of compliance in providing victim-friendly services for victims and survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). Thuthuzela Care Centres (TCCs) are one-stop facilities established as part of South Africa’s anti-rape strategy, with the aim of reducing secondary victimization and assisting successful prosecution. 

The oversight visit by the Portfolio Committee in Mpumalanga is also intended to assess the progress and outcomes of specific programmes by the institution in addressing gender -based violence and femicide (GBVF).   

The Following centres will be visited:

1. Themba Hospital (Thuthuzela Care Centre)- Kabokweni 
2. Masoyi Police Station – Masoyi 
3. Greater Rape Intervention Programme (GRIP)- Mbombela
